FLORENCE, Ala. - Officials at the Miss Alabama pageant have announced University of North Alabama students Jamie Brooks and Emily Winkler as recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award medal. His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, will recognize Brooks and Winkler April 28 at a garden party in Mountain Brook, Ala. During the past two years, Brooks and Winkler have worked on various achievements, including community service, special skills, physical fitness and Adventurous Journey, which was introduced to the U.S. through two different organizations - the Miss America organization and Boy Scouts of America. The Duke of Edinburgh's award was first presented in 1956 by his Royal Highness, Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the United Kingdom. Awarded to more than 7 million recipients in 132 countries, the medals have three different levels, including bronze, silver and gold. Each level of achievement can take anywhere from six months to several years to complete, officials said. The Adventurous Journey is the final step in the achievement process. Miss Alabama Courtney Porter, along with eight other state titleholders and 30 Miss Alabama contestants, will also receive an award at the event.
