FLORENCE, Ala. - The Shoals Symphony orchestra, along with University of North Alabama student Alexis Cote, will perform a concert called "Heroic Moments" March 4 at 2 p.m. in Norton Auditorium. Admission to the event will be $15 for adults, $5 for students and will be available at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts or the door the day of the event. Cotes, winner of the UNA Concerto competition, will be performing "Morceau de Concert" by Camille Saint-Saens. Cotes began her musical studies as a young child and has honed her skills by playing the violin and horn. She was a member of the Huntsville Youth Orchestra for seven years, and played the violin for five years and horn for two years. In addition to the Huntsville Youth Orchestra, Cotes was a three-time member of the Alabama All-State Red Band and also was a member of her high school marching band at Bob Jones High School. She is currently a sophomore at UNA, majoring in horn performance. Cotes, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, is also a member of the Pride of Dixie marching band and the UNA Brass Ensemble, Studio Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band. Last year, the Shoals Symphony at UNA has presented four public concerts and one school concert, provided master classes with professional musicians, given away more than $1,200 in prizes money to high school musicians in the regional Hoffmeister Competition for Young Adults, supported the Piano and String Camp at UNA, and provided scholarship funding for young, beginning students. These accomplishments by the symphony are through the generous support of friends and benefactors as well as the Alabama State Council on the Arts. The event will take place in the Florence Freshman Center and Middle School Auditorium. For more information about the event, contact Music Director and Conductor Viljar Weimann at 256-765-4516.
